With three headline competitions detailed below (and more to be revealed soon), CAP Expo offers one of the most prestigious platforms in the industry to be seen, celebrated and remembered.

A playful and imaginative challenge inviting balloon artists to bring destinations to life without recreating famous landmarks.
Instead of literal builds (e.g. the Eiffel Tower or the Great Wall), competitors should evoke a destination’s identity through colour, atmosphere, cultural cues, and clever references, such as:

Warm terracotta and olive tones inspired by Tuscany

Neon lights and crossing patterns reflecting Tokyo nightlife

Pastel beach hues and flamingo accents for Miami

Iconic red buses and umbrellas for London

Desert golds, blues, and market textures of Marrakech

Teams may set up their workstation between 09:15 and 09:45 on Saturday.

Competition work time runs 09:00–17:00 on Saturday 21 March. - this is the show set-up day

All entries must be fully completed by 12:00 on Sunday 22 March. - the show will be open to the public
-
A 30-minute clean-up period follows; all workspaces must be completely cleared by 12:30.

Competitors must vacate the competition area by 12:30 to allow judging to commence.
No time extensions will be granted.
It is the entrant’s responsibility to be ready to begin on time. The competition will start and finish promptly.
Space & Construction Requirements

All structural elements, framing, and props must fit entirely within the designated competition space

CAP Expo is not responsible for lost, delayed, or faulty products. Competitors must ensure all materials are on site and ready before the competition begins.
Judging Criteria
The competition will be judged using the following criteria. Competitors are encouraged to review these carefully and contact the organisers with any questions at capexpo@bapiaonline.com.
1. Research-Driven Inspiration

Reference images, colour palettes, and design rationale must be provided

Materials must be printed and submitted at the close of competition on Sunday

These must not be presented in person to the judges
2. Cultural Sensitivity

Designs should draw inspiration from atmosphere, colour, architecture, and mood

Avoid copying cultural symbols or religious motifs
3. Strong Visual Identity

The destination should be instantly recognisable without being literal or cliché

As this is a photo opportunity, designs must:

7. Rosettes
Rosettes will be awarded to those competitors who reach Gold, Silver or Bronze standards of work. This is aside from the main competition prizes
Additional Rules

Shine products are strictly prohibited due to health and safety concerns
-
Professional conduct and good sportsmanship are expected at all times
-
Any competitor found cheating or sabotaging another entry will be immediately disqualified and may be permanently barred from future CAP Expo competitions
CAP Expo promotes safe and responsible balloon use. This includes securely fixing helium-filled balloons to prevent release into the atmosphere.

Recycling and general waste disposal will be provided - please keep workspaces and show floors safe and hazard-free
-
Competitors are responsible for striking their own competition entry and removing any props, structures and equipment, this must take place after the show closes at 4pm on Monday 23rd March.
Structural frameworks may be pre-built and brought on site, however no creative elements may be pre-made. Vinyl may be cut and prepared in advance.
All competitors are responsible for assembling their own teams. CAP Expo organisers, staff, and volunteers may not compete or assist.
Team members must be confirmed before the competition begins and cannot be changed.
CAP Expo and BAPIA are not responsible for any lost or stolen items within designs. It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that all elements are fixed securely and cannot be removed.
The results of the competition will be announced on Monday 23rd March at 1500

Theme: Realms of Imagination - Small Sculpture

This is a live creative competition celebrating artistic skill in balloon twisting and design. Competitors will be given a space 1.22m long and 0.76m wide, this can be on a table top or on the floor. Competitors must produce an small sculpture inspired by the theme “Fantasy” While the focus is on balloon twisting, additional décor elements may be incorporated to enhance the final presentation.
Theme: Realms of Imagination
A whimsical and enchanted challenge inviting balloon artists to bring fantasy worlds to life - without directly recreating existing characters or copyrighted designs.
Instead of literal interpretations from well-known stories, competitors should evoke the spirit of fantasy through atmosphere, symbolism, mood, and magical visual cues, such as:

Shimmering jewel tones and swirling shapes suggesting a mystical forest

Iridescent textures and crescent silhouettes hinting at a moonlit dream realm

Twisting horns, scales, and metallic accents evoking dragon-guarded mountains

The finished sculpture should communicate a strong, coherent idea that is visually engaging without becoming literal, obvious, or stereotypical.
4. Thoughtful Use of Material

While latex modelling balloons should form the core of each sculpture, competitors are welcome, but not required, to incorporate complementary elements such as:
